Comments Off Monogrammed Coat
For me, one of the most pleasurable things about shopping for vintage clothing is to imagine the original owners and contemplate what their lives may have been like. I find it fascinating to have this arcane relationship with people whom I’ve never met, which in an esoteric way, I suspect is not as random as one might think.
I bought this three quarter sleeve coat for about four dollars at a second hand shop in my neighborhood, which sells clothing by the pound. I’m intrigued by the construction and the pinked edge of the inner breast pocket. I’ve only seen this sartorial detail once before on a woman’s vintage bespoke suit. But what particularly stands out for me is the orange monogram on the inside left lapel, which contrasts so beautifully with the coat’s charcoal grey color and it’s black satin lining. Comments Off C. Howard’s Violet Candy
C. Howard’s Violets have been around for as long as I can remember. Early one Sunday morning before a recent photo shoot, I stepped into a grungy Canal Street deli to pick up a bagel and a cup of coffee, and noticed the improbably flavored candy displayed on some shelves by the cash register. I asked the man behind the counter if they were still popular, and he said that every once in a while somebody buys a pack.
I learned from the company’s website that the candies were invented in the nineteen-thirties by a man named Charles Howard, who ran the operation out of an industrial loft on Broadway, probably not far from where I bought them. I find the purple and silver foil and the vintage graphics beautiful, and although I probably won’t be eating them, their sweet violet scent still permeates my apartment. I can’t help feeling nostalgic these days – I guess its part of getting older, but I find it somehow comforting to see that there are some things from my childhood that have remained unchanged.
Convertible Color
According to the Stila website, Convertible Color is described as “lipstick and blush-in-one”. I’m still undecided on is use as lip color, but it is the perfect cream blush. Available in nine colors, it will give you the dewy, polished glow you’ve always wanted. My favorite is the peachy “gerbera”. I can’t remember the last time I didn’t use it on a client, whether for an on-camera job, or a red carpet appearance. Its my go-to blush. Widely available. All products, including this one, should be spot tested for sensitivities. $25.
